Summertime is finally here… after 10 months of studying, the prospect of 2 whole months of freedom brightens our horizon. But with the current economic difficulties that most of us are in these days, we are left to resorting to being ingenious in spending our summer. Below is a list of suggestions that we could do at the comfort of our homes.
1. Develop a new talent. Be it singing or dancing… all it takes is just a few hours a day of practice, a cd player and let your hair down and by the end of one summer’s worth of practice, there will be a new singing or dancing sensation in town. But don’t limit yourself to these two… other hidden talents are waiting for you to unearth.
2. Exercise. Exercising doesn’t have to be in a gym. One could always roll out the mat and do some stretching and other simple routines which could easily be downloaded from the internet. Some of the routines you could do are sit-ups, body lunges, body squat, leg raises, step ups and a whole lot more. The list could be endless, be innovative.
3. Become a bookworm. Try to read a new book at least once a week. Head off to the various second hand stores like La Belle Aurore in Hernan Cortes St., Mandaue or to the different outlets of booksale. Be adventurous, try to read a genre you’ve never tried before and discover that there’s more out there than the usual love or mystery stories.
4. Go Camping in your own backyard. Call the barkada, make it a potluck camping and bring out your tents, sleeping bags and a fresh deck of cards. Lit a fire, share ghost stories and play some games in the dark. Bring out the child in you.
5. Start a collection. It doesn’t matter what as long as you are passionate in your collection. It can either be stamps, caps, cards, etc., the possibilities are boundless. And since it is summer you could also collect seashells or unique stones washed up from the beach.
6. Learn to cook a new dish or bake a cake. You don’t have to enroll in those costly cooking classes, just arm yourself with the back issues of cooking magazines, the right ingredients and the right attitude. Remember the motto, try and try until you succeed… Just don’t burn the house down!
7. Try your hand on gardening and you might discover that you have a green thumb. Just start with a small plot in your backyard and marvel at how fast they grow. Help mother earth… be green this summer.
8. Make a collage or a scrapbook of your old photos and other keepsakes from those special moments in your life. A scrapbook can contain photos, notes about an event, cards and a lot more. Make this a time for rediscovering the past and reliving all those happy times. An old schoolbook, glue and other common household materials are you need.
9. And what other better way to spend summer than to earn and enjoy at the same time. Head off to your attic or garage and dig out those old unusable things and have a garage sale. You get to clean the house and earn at the same time. Perfect!
10. Have a DVD marathon. Never had the chance to watch the latest season of CSI or glee? Now is the time for you to catch up. Prepare a bowl of popcorn and a pitcher of ice cold juice and you’re set.
Now, who says spending our summer is expensive?
